Little, a native of Harris County, Georgia, graduated from Emory College in 1858 and was admitted to the bar in 1859. In 1861, he enlisted in Company E, 15th Georgia Infantry but was discharged because of ill health in 1862. He accepted the captaincy of a company of Georgia state troops in 1864.
